In addition to its war services, the Navy has mobilized its war assets to conduct humanitarian rescue operations at home, as well as to participate in multinational task forces mandated by the UN to prevent seaborne terrorism and protect privacy off the coasts.
The Pakistan Navy has been deployed in relief operations and nation-building programs in times of national calamity and emergency. When an underwater earthquake caused a tsunami and struck South Asian nations in 2004, a tactical task force led by then-Commodore Asif Sandila coordinated peacetime relief operations in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. In October 2005, the Navy sent the PNS Badr (D-184) to help with relief efforts following the earthquake that struck the country’s northern region.
